the brief

Based on the character I designed and animated in the course ”Expressions with 2D animation 1” I was in this follow-up course challenged to animate a (+-) 10 second scene. 

storybuilding and concept

Starting this project, I crafted a script based on the character narrative, which unfolded in a space setting. Drawing on the character’s backstory involving trauma from losing a loved one to vicious alien creatures, the narrative follows the main character’s quest for revenge. Holding the title of sheriff over the region, she is exceptionally well-prepared for the job.

In developing the storyline, I found inspiration in the wild west, envisioning an aesthetically captivating opportunity to blend the wild west with a space setting—a concept I coined as the ”space cowboy.” Exploring this fusion felt nostalgically retro to me, sparking my intrigue to create a design that encapsulated the aesthetics of the past. 

production & final design

Moving into the production phase, I developed a storyboard that laid the groundwork for a keyframe animatic. This animatic played a crucial role in determining the timing and pacing of the film. Building on the keyframe animatic, I created a line test, expanding the animations with additional frames between the keyframes. Simultaneously, I painted the backgrounds, using brush textures with old comic feel to enhance the retro aesthetic. The color choices were also crucial to achieve the right feel, and in this aspect, I opted for a colorful and lighthearted scheme.  In the final stages, I integrated everything, adding finishing touches such as colors and shading to the characters.
