the brief

During my third year of studies at Linköping University, I took a course called ”Packaging Design and Display.” This course revolved around a project based on the brief provided by PIDA (Packaging Design Awards), an annual packaging design contest organized by Billerud. The goal was to submit our creations to this competition.

In summary, the brief challenged us to create a sustainable and innovative packaging solution capable of capturing the attention of social media users.

the process

For this project, I collaborated with my classmate and friend, Moa. Together, we developed a concept for a fictional makeup brand called ”Pomelo,” which revolves around the brand vision of promoting self-expression and inclusivity. Our primary focus was on designing lipstick packaging that was both unique and attention-grabbing.

After numerous brainstorming sessions, we found inspiration in a nostalgic childhood game called ”Mix Max,” in which players mix and match characters by swapping body parts. Drawing from this inspiration, our concept took shape. We aimed to create packaging that allowed users to playfully combine illustrated characters, enabling them to craft their own distinct combinations. This approach was designed to foster self-expression and unleash creativity among users, while it also had great possibility to evolve into a one of a kind packaging that would stand out on the store shelves.

The design process began by gathering inspiration and creating a concept board. I took on the role as the art director and ended up creating all illustrations and visual design elements for the packaging.

character illustrations

Once we had settled on the visual direction, I initiated the character drafting process using Adobe Illustrator, drawing inspiration from our concept board. To match the nostalgic and playful feel of the concept, I also took inspiration from cartoon illustrations.

To complete the cylinder packaging, we needed a total of four characters. We deliberated and assigned distinctive themes to each character, each embodying unique traits to highlight different personalities.

After numerous trial and error attempts, which involved experimenting with various self-made blueprints, we were ultimately able to assemble a printed version of the final design.
