the brief

In the fall of 2023, I took a course at Uppsala University called ”Digital Sculpting for Games 1.” The main goal of the course was to learn the basics of 3D sculpting using the software ZBrush. Our assignment was to create a 3D diorama picturing a scene of our choice.

the process - white boxing

To plan the composition, determine the essential objects, and establish their sizes, I began by ”white boxing.” This involved placing plain boxes or basic shapes to outline the diorama. We were required to create three different versions and select one to further develop. The dioramas underwent both peer review and feedback from the teacher, and I took this evaluation into account when proceeding with the project.

the process - rough sculpting

Having chosen one of the three white boxes to base the design on, I proceeded by sculpting rough meshes. During this stage a lot more objects were added, which lead to some rearrangments of the composition.

final design

Following feedback on the initial rough sculpt, I moved on to the refinement and finalization stage. This phase involved remeshing the topology for better manageability, sculpting details, and ensuring that all meshes had a high resolution while maintaining a consistent appearance. Additionally, I applied textures using alpha brushes and added color through polypainting to achieve the desired style. I also handled lighting, shadows, and materials, ultimately resulting in the render you see here.
